Kurukshetra-Just the beginning

By Manish Padhi

Kurekshetra 2013
Kurukshetra to FLAME is like Dharmendra to the Deols. The true pride of our college.
Great infrastructure complimented by the crazy set up which no other college had seen before, footfall of more than the number of extras in Jodha Akhbar and teams from all around the country made it a truly ‘national’ fest. (We even had a white basketball referee)
But there were also background incidents and reasons that made Kurukshetra a truly special and very “desi” character.
After 10am our field looked like Shivaji Park in Mumbai. Teams just sprawled out waiting for their matches to begin, people were sleeping under hoardings and posters looking for shade, couples were trying to get some one on one time behind the scoreboard and there were jerseys, socks, shoes, chaddis and sports bras drying under the sun. The atmosphere was not only buzzing with competition but it was also echoing with the voice of some guy from “Manasi Hospitality” announcing, “Vada pav lelo – Chana Jor Garam Khalo”.
And who can forget the ‘Men in Pink’. We should really have uniforms for the referees next year; it wasn’t the best site to see referees in pink T-shirts with haunting pit stains. If we were to actually make a compilation of all our referee video we could end up with another VIP underwear advertisement; ‘please adjust madi!!’
To top it all we had some delusional characters who tried to enter with fake college id’s of people they showed no resemblance to. Some player said that he looked fair because only the face part of his id had bleached over time. It was interesting, to see how fucking vela can our youth get. Please guys, you’ve passed your age to participate, get a job stop playing with children and balls. Time you get some.
One reason for a majority of our college population to be slightly disappointed was that even though there were stalls set-up by Dominos, Café Chokolade, Pepsi, Tibbs Frankies and of course Mansi-Hospitality, there was nobody selling Theplas and Dhoklas for our “Gujju peoples”! AA badhu suu che? Dhokla nathi!!
But in the end, putting all these things into perspective we can proudly say that Kurukshetra 2013 was ‘one of’ the best intercollegiate sports fest in the country. The only things, we needed to take this fest to the next level, were it being covered by Kunal Kapoor, broadcasted on DD Sports, IPL-style cheerleaders and a major scam to make conversation upon.
We tried to create an atmosphere of healthy competition, entertainment and enjoyment, for everyone who was a part of this grand event and we promise to make it even better when ‘The Battle Begins’ again!
