Media

                                      Journalism Basics- English Newspapers-Manish
Newspapers are said to be the best medium of communication since a very long time. I remember the first instance when I ever read newspaper was in school because it was compulsory time given to us to read the newspaper for 15 minutes before classes started. I started getting to the habit of reading it every day before the school stopped giving the usual ‘Times of India’ to read and switched it to ‘school times’. I was furious and never read that paper ever again in my life because there wasn’t any exciting, political or sporting news that would interest me, so I started shifting my focus from newspapers and started watching the news daily to get a better sense of what is happening in my country and around the world.
In a country like India, the media which is required to communicate the right news to the right people, that is why the media is said to be the most important medium in our country for communication. On the other hand, newspapers are read by everyone in this country. May it be in different languages or the same language but newspapers are said to be read by everyone.
The two newspapers which I am going to compare are ‘The Telegraph’ and the ‘Times of India’. ‘The Telegraph’ is known to be a national daily that is read mostly all across the eastern side of the country and is regarded as the most widely newspaper in that part whereas ‘Times of India’ is considered to be the most celebrated and successful newspaper to be read all over the country and has many prestigious awards over the years at media events by comparing the two why ‘Times of India’ does stand out then ‘The telegraph’ and many other English newspapers in the country.
THE TIMES OF INDIA
This newspaper which was started by the Bennett and Coleman limited in the year 1838 is understandably the most preferred newspaper to be read in a country like India. The most illustrious and significant news that you may want to read will be found in this newspaper. They have 5 sections along with the home page which is given significant importance like Times City, Times Nation, Times Global, Times Business and Times Sport. All these various sections of the newspaper have the most relevant, impactful and detailed information which an educated intellectual which has an opinion would like to read about it. The ‘Times of India’ has had a history of guest editors from various fields filling in the shoes of being the editor for the day. From politics, sports, cinema, authors etc all of them have had the privilege of being the editor of this prestigious newspaper.
Being an avid reader of the ‘Times of India’, I criticize it for two points; the first one being they are an extremely biases newspaper where they believe that there news and sources are the best you will be able to find where they always never have taken a diplomatic approach to any story and they always like drawing a conclusion to every story possible. They have a very hard hitting and frank approach towards the news they publish. Another point where I would like to criticize them is at because of their wide range of news they are not being able to concentrate on the more important news that happens in smaller parts of the country. That’s why often many people call ‘Times of India’ an intellectual read by many standards.
On a whole, I feel the ‘Times of India’ is one of the most presentable and broad news that you could imagine and I being a admirer of being straight forward, I would love to work with the ‘Times Of India’ one day as they love to market and spend money on the newspaper may it be in making it look better or inviting famous people to edit it.
The Telegraph
The Telegraph on the other hand, started in 1982 has become the fourth most read newspaper in the country and the most read in the eastern side of the country. It is a very young and appreciated newspaper all over the country. They do not spend heavily on advertising and have been acknowledged for their reports during the Kargil war, Maoists attacks or even the sports news that have been published over the years.
The points that go for ‘the telegraph’ is that they do not believe in wasting their time in writing news columns for fun or news that is worth making the 18 odd pages of the newspaper. They have been awarded for being the best newspaper in the eastern part of the country. It has also been noted for its extensive coverage on the Indian foreign policy and it’s focused reporting on India’s troubled north east. They have over 6 editions itself being run in the eastern side of the country, that primarily making it one of the reasons for its popularity. It’s focused, informative and that’s make it successful.
The problem which it faces is that it is marketed well and needs to be done properly to gain wider recognition in the country and with that it will certainly have a wider range of people reading it across the country.
Conclusion

Both the newspapers have their pros and cons but I believe that newspapers need to have an opinion and should be read by majority of people of the country. Both these papers have a certain audience where they reach out too and are special in their very own way in terms of reporting and entertainment.
