Movie Review

Movie - Pursuit of Happyness

Pursuit of Happyness is a true story of Chris Gardner who has become a Founder and CEO for Gardner and Rich co. In the movie Will Smith acts as Chris Gardner.
Chris a young man who has started out a business to sell bone-density scanners to doctor.  He use to spend his days selling this scanner to different doctor in different part of the city. He had a wife Linda and a son Christopher. He loved his family a lot and keep telling them to trust him and he would give them a better a life.
Chris is always thinking in the positive side. He is always thinking that thing will happen. He is also being realistic and positive at the same time. He is confident that he will sell his bone density scanners and earn enough money and pay up the bills, rent and take care of his family. He has applied to become broker and he knows that he will work hard and do well in that business so that he has another job and which pays him well. And the money will go for his family and their basic needs. Chris is mostly thinking in the eudaimonic thinking, that a state of being happy and healthy and prosperous meaning fullness. That is here, Chris is always happy and think of happy thing and staying positive, so by being like this he thinks that he will be achieves what he wants to achieve in his life and for his family. He does not ever give up in anything even though he need work hard and is struggling to have roof for his family too. We see that Chris keeps on telling his son to stay positive all throughout his life. Even though they were days where Chris could not have a proper roof for his son and him to sleep at night he manage to be positive and did something that his son would feel good. Like there was on scene in the movie that Chris had to take his son to the metro bathroom and they spent night there. at this time his son was disappointed and sad and wanted to o home and to his mom, but Chris told him that they are in the world of dinosaurs and that they have to find and cave and spend the night in there. Immediately his son was excited and they spent that in the bathroom in one of the metro line.

Some way on the other Christopher feels really proud of his father and loved his father for who he was and not for anything else. Christopher use to be happy and positive for his dad.
There was another example in the movie where Chris told his Christopher to be positive about, was that they would go for a football match after a day of selling the bone-density scanner. Which by staying realistic happens. They did go for the movie and there Chris ended making many contact for his business as a broker. This was one of the main events which happened in the movie. By having so many contacts and working hard Chris actually got selected to work the Dean Writer Company to work and have a better life.  Chris always thought of thing that would happen in a good way and positive way that all things did happen well for him and he has a better life.
Chris’s wife Linda, was always had a negative thinking. She stopped trusting and left him and went away to New York. She kept saying that things will not change; you will succeed and find a better job that will pay you well. The family will suffer and will not survive with no roof or food to have even though she was working on two shifts at her job that didn’t pay her well.
Throughout the movie she did not support her husband much. She only supported him when it came to taking of Christopher their son.
So we see that Chris had a Positive and eudaimonic thinking, and has influence his son too, to also think in such a way and not think in negative way at all. Whereas his wife has not taken this in account of positivity and has always been negative and also had negative thoughts.

Socio-economic reasons for Poverty in India with reference to Agriculture

India is still in the developing stages. The major issues hindering the development in India are- Poverty, lack of education, corruption, unsteady industrial growth, bad legislation and so on. The others are quite eradicable if adequate measures are taken. Poverty is not a petty problem. Maximum population comes from rural areas and therefore poverty is something which would be very difficult to eradicate.
Agriculture is India’s major occupation. The economy is striving on the agricultural produce and its export. But the incidence of poverty is on a persisting high due to backward agriculture. The production per hectare and per capita is very low. This is not only because of over-population but also because of very low production which is only about 60% of the world average.
State of Punjab has the productivity potential equivalent to that of the developed countries. If India is to attain the same productivity potential as of Punjab, its production would be more than double than what it is today. If the vast untapped potential of the Indian agriculture, the amount and quality of scientific knowledge and the positive response of the farmers, neither Indian agriculture should remain backward nor our people should be the poorest in the world.
India has about 40 million ha of land which lies unutilised. We still depend on natural resources to grow our crops. Farmers still rely on rains as the source of water. They cannot afford irrigation to supply water to their crops. Due to lack of awareness and education, they do not benefit from the various schemes of the government. Thus, the condition of agriculture remains backward no matter the kind of steps that are taken to develop it.
Due to this dependability, the production is of very low quantity and quality. Thus, the farmers lose a large share of crops in destruction. They are forced to sell the crops at a much lower costs which hardly recover their capital. Most of them incur losses leading to bad debts and increased credits. This results in more and more poverty among already poverty struck areas.
Considering rate of agricultural growth, the factors determining its distribution across farm sizes, its impact on tenancy conditions, its effect on the demand for labour, etc, the increase in poverty is just massive as all these factors get affected with backward agriculture. The growth of agricultural output has only just kept pace with the growth of the rural population which results in stagnation in output per head.
If a regression analysis is done between the incidence of poverty and agricultural performance, we find that improved agricultural performance is definitely associated with reductions in the incidence of poverty. Fluctuation in poverty incidence simply mirrors the movement in agricultural production per head and this inverse relationship is even more firmly identifiable when account is taken of the lags involved.

The evidence on the relationship between rural poverty and agricultural performance is more difficult to evaluate for two reasons. In the first place, the evidence itself is somewhat mixed. Much depends upon the level of aggregation at which the analysis if conducted with the all-India results presenting a somewhat different picture from that obtained at the level of individual states. Furthermore, the evidence necessarily is difficult to interpret since we are implicitly searching for causal relationships in what are at best observed correlations.

Short Film – Lapandav- hide and seek

Short Film – Lapandav- hide and seek

The movie starts off with the girl counting till 100. She is playing hide and seek with her friends and she is the seeker.  The girl is very cheerful and happy. She starts to seek her friend down and while she does she again becomes the seeker since she has caught the wrong person.  But she is again cheerful even though she does not want to be the seeker.
In the next seen we her getting ready and her mother is telling her neighbor that they have a paying guest s staying for few week with them and that this will benefit the family since they will earn some extra money over the time. The gilr is excited about the guest coming and staying with them that she is getting ready especially for him. That is what I think about the shot of the girl getting ready while her mother is talking to the neighbor.
The guest comes and he is greeted and welcomed to their house. He settles his stuff into this room and all. The girl all through this is admiring him. He is from Kerala and a kathakali dancer.
The next shot we see them all eating dinner, the mother is serving them. the man is making round balls of the rice and dipping it in the dal and eating it, he make huge balls of the rice. The girl looks at him and admires the way and style of the way he is eating. She also tries his style of eating but she cannot. She is very amused by the man who had come to stay in her house.
The next day we see that the man is practicing his dance in his room and a boy looks through the window and admires and laughs at what he is doing. Then looking at the boy the other children around the area and so is the girl comes and looks at the man  dance and wonder what he is up to. The boy see him through a red color lass piece where he see everything red in color and a different effect falls on the screen
Then while he is resting and reading a book the children and the girl look at him from the window and laughs at him. The man smirks at himself by seeing how the children are looking at curiously and laughing at what he is doing. He just takes it very cool for the way the children react looking at him; he does not tell them anything.
There is a shot where he is applying makeup on him and the children are surrounding him and sitting and admiring. The look at the different material that he is using to put make up and also the different jewelry that he is going to use.  They are fascinated by the different items he has. They put on their ears, neck and also take a crown like thing put it on their head. While he out make up that laugh at him. They also pass on messages to each other in whispers and laugh at him.
All through the movie the children are very curious and admire the man that has come.
Coming to the end of the movie we see a shot where the girl is going upstairs to give the man a box of food which her grandmother gives her to give him. When she enters his room, she doesn’t find him and finds his things laying on the floor. She leaves the box on the table and sits on the floor admiring his makeup and jewelry.
She tries to put the makeup on herself, but she cannot. She keeps looking at the jewelry when the man enters the room. He then sits with her and puts the makeup on her face. while he is putting make up on her she suddenly gets scared  and runs out of the room.  And runs and sit in another corner of the house in a room that is dark and cries. I think cries because maybe she didn’t like the way he was touching her putting the makeup on her and also maybe because she is doing something wrong for which her parents may scream at her and she would be some trouble. The story ends with her crying in the dark room.

journalism

Yes , I do agree to what Mr Justice Makarand Katju said because Journalism is a career. When a qualified field is at an undeveloped stage there is no need for formal training or a formal qualification. Journalism is the activity or product of journalists or others engaged in the preparation of written, visual, or audio material intended for broadcasting through public media with reference to realistic, ongoing events of public concern. It is intended to inform society about itself and to make public, things that would otherwise be private. Journalism is directed at the consumers of media products, who may include general audiences, or narrower market segments. In modern society, news media have become the chief source of information and opinion about public affairs; but the role and status of journalism, along with other forms of mass media, are undergoing changes resulting from the Internet. This has resulted in a shift toward reading on e-readers, smartphones, and other electronic devices rather than print media and has faced news organizations with the ongoing problem of monetizing on digital news. So even if the person has majored in journalism they should be able to understand what exactly they should do after they become journalists. In todays world media is becoming means of living and in this media journalism is growing wider and wider. But you can never learn journalism completely there are some pros and cons in learning. But this days young journalists are becoming successful in their careers with minimum qualifications of journalism. In earlier times journalism was not so popular. But this days it is growing immensely even if we have minimum qualifications. So I think we have minimum qualifications for journalism and get better jobs out of this field and be successful as other journalist who are successful.

Saying Goodbye to 1 more year at FLAME

With every year passing by gradually, I have reached the close of my third year in FLAME. Some of my friends will graduate this year, while some others will graduate with me. Saying goodbye to those who graduate in two weeks from now is a little more difficult than anticipated! Somewhere between the late nights full of assignments and the coffee breaks between classes, one more year at FLAME has passed and we prepare to bid farewell to our seniors and take their places in a few months for a new academic year. It seemed like a long, a very long four year journey but today it feels like four weeks and we have yet to know so much more about each other and about our college.

Saying goodbye was never easy but one must for as time moves on so do we.

Here's to old friends and new beginnings!

CHARACTER SKETCH OF CRASH

Critical Writing- Crash

CRASH IS A FILM WRITTEN AND DIRECTED BY PAUL HAGGIS AND THE STARCAST IS DON CHEADLE, SANDRA BULLOCK, THANDIE NEWTON....

The story has a parallel of 6 six stories.  The beginning is that of an accident scene where the detective Graham and Ria his girlfriend make their first appearance.

1.     Graham Waters- Graham is a sincere man, dedicated to his work and mother and goes out of the way for them. he is also searching for his brother who has been missing for a few days. He is a little racist as he tells his mother that he is busy with a Mexican woman. He replaces the food for his mother overnight when she is sleeping and she feels that her younger son had come back.  He is shown as a very disturbed character as he keeps smoking at the chances that he gets. He is not truly in love with Ria as he shows her no gratitude when she goes with him to the morgue.

2.     Ria- the girlfriend of Graham. She is just accompanying him around wherever he goes. She want to meet his mother, but he blatantly lies saying that she is not there. She accuses him of not her genealogy. She doesn’t have many dialogues to say. She is a very caring woman as she goes to the morgue with Graham and his mother even though she has had a fight with him.

The next scene is that of a Persian buying a gun in a racist’s shop with his daughter.

3.     Farhad- he is a Persian, who doesn’t trust Americans at all and thus has gone to buy the gun thinking that it would keep him and his family and shop safe.  He gets offended very quickly and starts getting suspicious of people. He even has an interaction with the lock smith Daniel who suggests to him to change the door which he doesn’t and gets angry at him saying that he wants to cheat him. Daniel walks on him without even taking the money. In the night the store gets robbed and Farhad blames Daniel for this and goes to kill him but, Daniel is saved by his daughter who jumps in front of him and saves him. Farhad is awestruck and is left standing in the driveway thinking that Lara is the angel.

4.     Dorri- she is a very smart woman who knows how to handle herself and her father, who gets out of control often. She helps the father with the shop and looks after her family.  We just get to see her character by her mannerisms and behaviour.
We then get introduced to a couple walking on a street and the wife gets insecure when she sees two “black men” and clutches on to her husband.

5.     Rick Cabot- he is the local district attorney. His car gets jacked by two black men. He wants to maintain peace is the district so he doesn’t identify the car sackers in fear of him being considered racist and he tries to make his wife also understand not to be racist but she doesn’t listen. He is a caring husband because in the end when he hears about his wife’s injury he comes there as soon as he can though he gets angry at her for being careless.

6.     Jean- she is the wife of the district attorney. She is a paranoid woman and feels that all the bad things would happen to her and in fact because of her actions the car gets jacked. She wants keeps everything safe and secure but doesn’t manage to do so. In the end she falls down a flight of stairs and when she calls her friends for help they are busy and the only one who comes is her servant who is Hispanic. In the end she realizes that everyone is good and she hugs the servant and tells her that she is her best friend hence we see a change in her perception of individuals.

7.     Anthony- he is one of the boys who jacks the car of the attorney as he is angry that everyone is being racist. He says that even in the coffee shop they don’t get coffee a second time even if they pay for it.  He likes listening to rap music and puts that in the car after jacking it. He hits a man while trying to run away with the car. He tries to steal Cameron’s car by putting a gun to his head but Cameron being in a bad mood beats him up instead and then when they arouse the suspicion of a police both get into the car.  Cameron tells Anthony that he embarrasses him and then in the end we see that Anthony finds a car full of Asian woman whom he goes and leaves in china town and gives them some money. Thus seeing the change in character where he could have very well sold them and become rich.

8.     Peter- he is the missing brother of Graham and along with Anthony jacks the attorney’s car. He is a god fearing boy and carries a voodoo doll everywhere with him.  When the police comes to catch them he escapes from that sight. He takes a lift from a police officer who has the same passion for voodoo dolls as him and in the end when he is about to show him his voodoo doll he gets shot as the officer finds him suspicious and ends up shooting him.

Daniel is first is seen in the movie in the district attorney changing the locks where he hears a conversation between Jean and Rick, where Jean and Rick are having an argument about her being racist. Daniel just walks out without bothering in the matter.

9.     Daniel Ruiz- he is a Hispanic who is working as a lock smith in that area. He is a very hardworking man and is very honest. He explains to his daughter not to be scared and gives her a security blanket which will protect her.  He goes for night rounds of completing his job and goes to Farhad’s shop to fix the lock and suggests to him to fix the door but Farhad being suspicious fires him and Daniel just walks out on him. When Farhad’s shop is robbed he goes to Daniel’s house to kill him but Daniel is saved by his daughter Lara.

10.  Lara- she is a five year old who gets scared in the night by the sound of gun shots. She very obedient and wants to help her father. She actually runs out to save her father when she realizes that he gave her his security blanket.
John the police man is first introduced as talking to an insurance agent very rudely on the phone. He is a racist and when he comes to know that the lady on the other side of the phone is African- American he just rattles on.

11.  John Ryan- he is a very short tempered man. He gets very angry for little thing. He has a good heart. We come to know this as he is very caring for his father and even when it comes to saving people’s lives he would do everything that he can.  He is frustrated as he sexually molests a woman while her husband is pinned down to the car. Though he does that to the woman he finally ends up saving her in the end.

12.  Tom Hanson- he is John’s partner. He is very afraid of him ever since he saw him molest a woman. He asks for a transfer and prefers riding solo. He helps the man he had pinned down another time to save his life and lets him go with a harsh warning. He is the one who kills Graham’s bother by mistake since he was very suspicious and thought that something wrong would befall him.

13.  Shaniqua Johnson- she is the insurance agent that John has a fight with; though she is a caring woman she also like John has a short temper.
Cameron and his wife Christine are First Street driving towards their house where they are stopped by the police.

14.  Cameron Thayer- he is a film director and though he “black” doesn’t like the fact that it is to pronounced. When talks to the officer and apologizes and does not do anything when his wife is violated, he thinks it was the right thing to do. Though after that incident he has tough time at his house and walks out on his wife. He is a very caring man and tells Anthony that he embarrasses him, after the incident where they try to steal his car.

15.  Christine- she is a very out spoken woman. She is a little drunk when we first get introduced to her. She is the one who gets sexually molested by the police man. She has an argument with her husband where he walks out on her. She even goes to meet him where he just ignores her. On her way back she gets into an accident where John comes to save her and she lets him touch her on his pleading that there was no one to rescue her. She finally accepts to husband’s presence of mind of the night when they get caught. She even calls him in the end to ask him to come back.

16.  Kim Lee-she is the Chinese woman who we get introduced to first, when we see a crime scene in the beginning when she makes a racial statement towards another woman. It’s also her husband who is knocked down by Anthony when he is running away with the car and they are the ones who are in the business of selling Asian women.

Hence we see how there are parallel life stories at the same time in the movie.

A New Horizon.....

With the exams right around the corner. There seems to be sudden stillness in the atmosphere and the sense of seriousness has crept in. The usual buzz has reduced as everyone is behind closed doors working hard to complete the pending assignments. The graduating batches want to have fun but are bogged down with lots of work and a high tension filled air is being circulated. The food joints are being crowded till late in the night since people are studying till late. The last days of frenzy seems to be approaching real fast!!!! And soon as a part of the graduating batch this will all be left behind and we will open a chapter in our life. Flame School of Communication has been such an interesting journey as we have learnt so much and gained a lot of knowledge. Even though my major is International Studies and minor in Communication I have gained a lot of new perspectives.
